May 31, 2024 – Sen. Nick Miller (D-Lehigh/Northampton) and the city of Allentown are hosting a free community safety event on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the 500 block of Allen Street in Allentown.

“Fire safety is incredibly important, and taking part in this event could help save lives,” said Miller. “I encourage members of the community to stop by and learn something about fire safety that could make a monumental difference in their neighborhoods.”

From 11 a.m. until noon, the Allentown Fire Department will simulate a house fire in the neighborhood. One home will be designated as “on fire” and neighbors will be advised on how to safely evacuate in this situation.

From noon until 2 p.m., there will be a fair, along with demonstrations, stimulations and resources from the Allentown Fire Department, Allentown Health Bureau and the Red Cross.

Allentown Fire Department Chief Efrain Agosto added, “It is extremely important to understand what to do when you are made aware of a fire that is occurring either in your home or any attached structures. This event will give all involved an opportunity to have a better understanding of what you should or should not do during a fire and it is great opportunity to learn some valuable fire prevention lessons through this drill and the educational component that goes along with it. I really look forward to this event.”

“Fire is a very real threat to all of us,” said Miller. “We have unfortunately seen several recent fire tragedies in the Lehigh Valley. I am confident people who attend will walk away with some new knowledge about fire safety.”

Tomorrow, June 1, the Red Cross is offering free smoke detector installation from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for their Sound the Alarm event. People may sign up to volunteer or request a free smoke alarm installation at SoundTheAlarm.org/GreaterPA

“This is a great reminder to check your smoke detectors, have a family plan for a fire and to create an emergency kit,” said Miller.
